Richard Stewart

Richard (Dick) E. Stewart, 92, of Duluth joined his beloved wife Maxine in peace on June 4, while in the care of St. Lukes Hospice. Dick was born in Duluth Feb. 7, 1920. He attended Chester Park Elementary School in its first year of enrollment, graduated from Central High School class of 1937 and attended the Minn. Civil Service School in Duluth. He served three years in the Army field artillery at Fort Ord in California, returning to run his familys locksmith and gun repair business in 1946. He met his dear love, Maxine, while on a job to repair a door lock, and they married in 1949. They built a new store at the corner of 15th Ave. E. And London Road (now Marine General) with Dicks -mustering out- pay. Later he moved Stewarts Wheel Goods up two blocks to a larger building at 1502 E. Superior Street to accommodate the expanding business. Dick was an enthusiastic supporter of sports at all levels in the Duluth area, sponsoring many youth hockey teams, supplying the UMD mens hockey team for a time, and working on the Spirit of Duluth hockey tournament committee. In his honor, the Dick Stewart cup is awarded to the winning team of the CCM All Star Hockey game each year. Dick had season tickets for UMD mens hockey from when they played at the original Curling Club on London Road and never missed a game if he could help it. He could always be heard to cheer Go Dogs! throughout the arena and waved his windsock enthusiastically to cheer the team on. He was a lifetime member of the United Baptist Christian Church, singing in the choir there as well as with the Duluth Light Opera Company, which performed Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in the 50s and 60s. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Masons, Glen Avon #306. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Richard E. and Gertrude (Stalley) Stewart; his sister Joyce S. Hanson; and his wife Maxine G. Stewart. He is survived and sadly missed by his daughters Susan E. Stewart, Jacksonville, Fla., and Lesley S. Lenox of Duluth, as well as nephews William (Patty) Hanson, David (Linda) Hanson, both of Duluth, and niece Marge (Tom) Marwick of Tower. The family would like to thank his team of private caregivers and St. Lukes hospice for their wonderful care. VISITATION: 5-8 p.m. Friday in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Saturday from 1 p.m. to the 2 p.m. Memorial Service at the Seitz Arena at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center, 120 S 30th Ave. West. Duluth.
