Richard D. Veech, long time teacher and coach at Hermantown died suddenly Monday, February 17, 2014 at his home in Hermantown, he was 78. Dick was born September 25, 1935 to Thomas and Antoinette Veech and he was a lifelong resident of Hermantown. He graduated from Hermantown High School in 1953 and then from UMD with a degree in teaching and he also received his Master in Geography from UMD. He married the love of his life, Caryl Mansfield on September 22, 1956. Dick started his teaching career in Esko for one year and then to Hermantown, retiring in 1992. Dick was head basketball coach and assistant football and track coach. He loved Hermantown; he enjoyed all of its sports and was usually in attendance for the games, especially when his children and grandchildren were involved. He was an avid gardener and reader, and would be seen reading in his chair in front of his home on a nice day.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; twin infant daughters, Shelly and Sherri; his son, Corey; brother, Thomas Lowell Veech and sisters, June Jenny and Ruth Keeler.
Dick is survived by his wife, Caryl; son, Kyle (Lisa) Veech; daughters, Eryn (Rob) Carr both of Hermantown and Jill Veech of Chicago. Grandchildren, Kelsey, Maxwell and Elliot Veech and Corey and Parker Anderson; his sister, Vivian Gibbs and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-7pm in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Saturday from 10am to the 11am Services and First United Methodist Church (Copper Top), 230 E Skyline Parkway, Duluth. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to Hermantown Public Schools, 4307 Ugstad Rd., Hermantown, MN 55811. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E 2nd St. Duluth, (218) 727-3555.
