Robert "Bob" Alsop, Jr. passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2016, surrounded by his wife and children at Lakeshore Fountains in Duluth. He was 92.
Bob was born May 12, 1923 to Robert and Mathilda (Aaseng) Alsop in Montevideo, Minn. He moved to Duluth at the age of 4, and made his home there for the next 88 years.
Bob graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1941. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, and spent 18 months in the China, Burma, India Theater before being discharged in 1946. He married June Hansen, his high school sweetheart, on April 13, 1946.
Bob spent 37 years working for Northwestern Bell Phone Company as a PBX installer. He retired in 1983. Bob was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church, where he served on many boards and as an usher. He was also involved with the Builders Inn project.
A devoted father and husband, Bob and June made many happy memories square dancing, traveling, socializing with friends, and going on camping trips with their four children. He was a member of Telephone Pioneers, the Lester Park Senior Golf League, Kiwanis K, and the Park Hill Cemetery Board.
He remained active in Central High School reunions, enjoyed watching sports, and, in retirement, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Lifeline. He cherished time spent with family.
Bob leaves behind a remarkable legacy that includes 70 years of marriage, four children, ten grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren to whom he served as an example of loyalty, kindness and humility. He was active and engaged in the world and in the lives of his family, and will be remembered for his gentle spirit, kind heart, and warm, inviting personality.
Bob is survived by his wife June; children Karen (John) Crandall, Susan (Stephen) Asp, Marilyn (Chris) Hull, and Robert III (Natalie) Alsop; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; a brother Donald (Jean) Alsop; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 pm Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation continues on Wednesday, March 9th from 9:30 am until the 10:30 am funeral service at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior St. Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery. Should friends desire memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth, 727-3555.
