Robert Wherley

Robert Clifford Wherley,
84, died in Essentia
Health-St. Mary's Medical
Center in Duluth on
Thursday, July 24, 2014,
with his family by his side.
Robert "Bob" was born
in Duluth Oct. 18, 1929, to
Thomas and (Freida
Nordstrom) Wherley. Bob
grew up and went to
school in Duluth. He
served in the U.S. Air
Force during the Korean
War. He Married Helen
Merrylee Olsen April 15,
1952. For many years Bob
worked for the family
business, Wherley Mayflower
Moving and Storage.
In 1964 he took his
family on a five-year adventure
by purchasing the
Siesta Isles Motel and
managing a Mayflower
moving company in Fort
Myers Beach, Fla. Moving
his family back to Duluth
in 1969, he purchased
rental properties and the
Bratwurst House, currently
known as the Chalet
Lounge, which is still
family owned today.
Bob taught his children
the value of hard work but
understood there was
time for play, too. He continued
to work every day
right up until the time of
his death. He had a deep
appreciation for his family
and friends, anytime there
was an issue he would
quietly offer his love and
support for the duration.
Bob had an easy smile
and a conversation for
any that would engage
him.
Bob will be dearly
missed by his family and
friends.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and
brother Richard.
Bob is survived by his
loving wife, Helen; children
Barb (Chuck) Hakes,
Wendy (John) Purdiak,
Michael (Jill) Wherley and
John (Kim) Wherley;
brother Tommy (Paula)
Wherley; 12 grandchildren;
13 great-grandchildren;
and numerous,
nieces, nephews, family
and friends.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m.
Tuesday, July 29, in Dougherty
Funeral Home. Private
family service will be
held at a later date.
