Rodney James Hyvonen, 76, of Duluth, MN passed away peacefully on Dec 4, 2023 after a long journey with an aggressive neurodegenerative disease.
He was born Oct 24, 1947 to Arnold and Edith Hyvonen in Duluth, MN. He was raised as a proud Central Hillsider where he met many of his lifelong friends. He was an instigator of good fun, but not a rule breaker. His dad was proud to tell all, “Roddy was a good boy!”
Rod married the great love of his life on Dec 8th, 1973. Two daughters were soon to follow. He was an engaged father and a disciplined family man. His dedication and loyalty created a beautiful foundation for his daughters and grandchildren.
He was a quiet man who also loved to share stories in great detail, speaking to local history and community connections. Slow and deliberate in nature, he appreciated simple beauty and took time to capture life with his camera. Family was the most important thing to him and he always showed up for those he loved. His legacy will not be forgotten by those who were blessed to know him.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents; nephew, Randy Mattson; and numerous special in-laws.
He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Kelly (Barry) Chastey and Laurel Hyvonen; grandchildren, Keegan, Parker, Luci, Jonah, Aida, and Emelia; numerous extended family members and friends, including his best friend Ronayne (Pack) Packingham.
A quaint family service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery on Dec 8, 2024; Rod and Mary’s 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Special thanks to the loving, compassionate care teams at Elysian Assisted Living and Gentiva Hospice, and Dougherty Funeral staff. You are deeply appreciated.
