Samuel Phillip Berzon, age 87, of Duluth, and formerly of Superior, died Monday, September 15, 2014 at Bayshore Health Center in Duluth. He was born in Duluth January 4, 1927 to Abraham C. and Anna Lena (Yonesowitz) Berzon. Samuel was a graduate of Morgan Park High School and a 1951 graduate of the Annapolis Naval Academy. He was a Marine veteran of World War II and the Korean War serving as a Battery Commander of SAMS (Surface Air Missile Unit). Following his military service, he worked in the Aerospace Industry. He worked for RCA in Morristown, NY, Boeing in Seattle, and Vitro Laboratories in Silver Springs, MD. In the late 60's and early 70's he worked as a PI for the famed attorney Jim Garrison who tried Clay Shaw for conspiracy in the Kennedy assassination (the only person brought to trial). He was a life member of the West End VFW. Samuel was preceded in death by his mother Anna on October 16, 1978 and by his father Abraham on October 14, 1992. Samuel is survived by his sister Gertrude "Gita" (Marvin) Gerstein of Lincolnwood. IL; a niece and a nephew; and his friends Charles and Eva Baker of Superior. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
