Sister Johnetta (Genevieve) Maher, OSB, 102, died March 30, 2025, at St. Scholastica Monastery. She was born November 7, 1922, in Powers, Michigan, grew up in Watersmeet, Michigan, and came to Duluth to major in Home Economics at The College of St. Scholastica. She entered St. Scholastica Priory in 1942, taking the name Sister Johnetta, and celebrated her 80th Jubilee in 2023. Sister taught Home Economics at Stanbrook Hall and Cathedral High Schools in Duluth. Later she taught Home Economics at The College of St. Scholastica for 33 years as an Associate Professor and Chair of the Home Economics Department and Coordinator of the Early Childhood Family Education Program. The College was one of the first institutions to receive licensure for this program in Minnesota. After retirement she served as Coordinator of the Monastery dining room and overseer of the Monastery Heritage Room collection of antique furniture and works of art. Sister Johnetta was known for her crocheted baby blankets and yarn cats made for the Monastery Christmas sale and gift shop. She will be remembered for her radiant smile, her deep love for God and ministry, and her joy in small things. She was preceded in death by parents, John Stephen and Mayme (Grondine) Maher; brother, John; and sisters, Patricia (James) Vidmar and Margaret Maher. She is survived by her sister, Frances Kessel; cherished nephews and nieces; many friends, and her Benedictine Sisters. Wake service and Morning Prayer with visitation will be at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, April 10 in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Father Corbin Eddy presiding.
