Susan Semrad

Susan Jane Getchell Semrad, 88, died Oct. 24, 2013 in Duluth, Minn.

Born Oct. 19, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN, to Frank Benjamin and Allace Cowen Getchell.

She moved to Duluth at age 1, attended Congdon Park and Holy Rosary primary schools, and Stanbrook Hall. She moved back to Minneapolis in 1940, graduating from Washburn High School in 1943, and the University of Minnesota in 1947 with a B.A. in Social Work.

Susan worked as a summer Girl Scout camp counselor in Minneapolis and Philadelphia, Pa., and became Field and Camp Director with the Berks County Girl Scout Council in Reading, Pa., from 1948 to 1953. She was the Executive Director of the Northern Pine Girl Scout Council in Duluth from 1953 to 1960.

She married Charles Joseph Semrad, February 13, 1960, in Minneapolis.

Susan was an Active Member of the Junior League of Duluth, and the Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae local chapter. She volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital gift shop for many years. She organized a capital fund drive for the Congdon Recreational Society Warming House, and managed its snack bar for several years.

A member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Duluth, Susan served in many volunteer capacities at the Church and at Holy Rosary School.

Survivors include a son, Charles Joseph ("Joe") Semrad, Jr. and his wife Jackie of Bloomington, Minn.; sisters Catherine Gabel and her husband Bob of Huntsville Texas, and Sister Frances Getchell OSC of Bloomington, Minn.; and grandchildren Laura and Dan Semrad. Nieces and nephews Sara (Roger) Hood, Christie (Fred) Stotz, Terry (Lewis) Wright, Peter Gabel, Becky (Steve) Seltz, all of Texas, and Chuck (Connie) Quinn of Fresno, Calif. and Dennis (Rose) Quinn of St. Joseph, Mo.

VISITATION: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Burial St. Mary's Cemetery, Minneapolis. Memorials directed to Northern Pine Girl Scout Council or Holy Rosary School are appreciated. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 727-3555.
