Terence "Terry" Churchill

June 30, 1939 — June 19, 2018

Terence Virgil Churchill, 78, Duluth, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at Solvay Hospice House surrounded by his family’s love.  Born June 30, 1939, in Virginia, MN, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna Maria Grimm Churchill; his children Mary Kimberly Churchill and Richard Halligan, Timothy John and Leslie Quall Churchill, and Suzanne Churchill Hurin and Roy Hurin; grandchildren Bailey Maria Churchill, Benjamin Caleb Luhm, and Jackson Charles Churchill; brother and sister-in-law Patrick George and Katherine Churchill; six nephews and nieces; several cousins; and loving dog Mickey. Terry loved his children and grandchildren deeply; each was very special in his eyes.

Terry was proceeded in death by parents Lida Mae Murphy Churchill and Roland Virgil Churchill; maternal grandparents Mary Ellen Holloran Murphy and Patrick M. Murphy; paternal grandparents Clara Tregillis Churchill and George Washington Churchill; parent-in-laws Mary Ann Baer Grimm and Roswell Edward Grimm; aunts and uncles Patricia Murphy and Marlowe Axell, Ethel Murphy and George LeSage, Delores Murphy and Raymond Vaillant, Adrian Ardeth Murphy, Jeremiah and Mary Jane Murphy, and Priscilla Churchill Kinghorn; three cousins; former sister-in-law Arlene Churchill; and two faithful pups Bo and Babe Ruth.

Terry was a graduate of Gilbert (MN) High School, Eveleth Jr. College, University of MN-Duluth and University of WI-Superior.  He was also a Blandin Fellow and Charter Member of Bush Foundation Fellowship.  He served the Duluth Public Schools his entire career starting as a fifth-grade teacher at Laura McArthur Elementary School, administering many ISD 709 educational programs, and completing his career as an elementary school principal.  After his retirement in 1995 he returned to service as the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Duluth, fully retiring in 2000.  He enjoyed participating on numerous boards and served as chair of several including the Community Action Board, DAREA, Kid’s Voting, and Emeritus College.

In post-retirement, Terry enjoyed folk art painting, creating many pieces that held special meaning to those to whom he gifted them.  He was also a “snow angel,” clearing walks and driveways for neighbors for many winters.

The family thanks the staff at Essentia Hospice Homecare, Ecumen Lakeshore Rehab and Home Care, and Solvay Hospice House for their compassionate care.

VISIATION:  Friday, June 22, 2018 from 10 AM until the 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 4901 E. Superior St.  Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Animal Allies are preferred  Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 218-727-3555..
