Age 93, of Duluth passed away in Open Arms Senior Living on Sunday, February 25, 2024. Thomas was born on December 24, 1930 to William John, Jr. and Virginia McCabe. He graduated from Duluth Central in 1948. He married the love of his life, Alice Johnson on July 17, 1954.
He was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church all his life, where he sang in the choir for 70 years, and participated in Sunday School, the Men’s Group, Elders, Deacons and several other committees. Tom was active in Boy Scout Troop 9 as a scout and a leader. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Rotary Club 25 and especially enjoyed the hands-on projects like the boardwalks on Park Point, at Hartley Nature Center, and traveling to Peru to work on a medical clinic. The outdoors brought a lot of joy to Tom so much so he made a career of working in the woods. He started his logging business, McCabe Forest Products, in 1953 with a horse and a bow saw. By the time he retired, the logging business was a fully mechanized operation. He was involved in the Minnesota Timber Producers Association as president and on the Executive Committee for many years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He had a green thumb and each year tended a large vegetable garden. He loved spending time at the lake.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, William John McCabe III, his sister, Barbara Haight, and his dog, Mindy. He is survived by his wife, Alice; children, Thomas, Jr. (Christine) of Duluth, Robert (Cynthia) of Esko, Sandra (Herb) Reiersen of Maple Grove, MN and James (Maddie Spears) of Fort Myers, FL; grandchildren Michael, Brian, Andrew, Melanie, Amy, Brandon, Johanna, April, TJ, James, Melia, Jacob, and 29 great-grandchildren.
A special note of thanks goes to the St. Lukes’ Hospice nurses and all the caring people at Open Arms. Visitation at 10 AM until the 11 AM Service on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, 2105 Woodland Ave. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
