Walter "Walt" Eric Alvar, 87, of Hermantown, formerly of Copley Rd. died Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at Viewcrest Health Center, surrounded by his family. Walt was born January 11, 1928 in Duluth to Eric and Lydia Alvar. He graduated from Duluth Denfeld and served in the US Navy after WW II. He worked as a Carman for the Northern Pacific, now known as BN Santa Fe Railroad for 35 years. Walt married Fay Oland on February 20, 1954 in Duluth. Walt was a member of the TCU/IAM and NARVRE; he enjoyed fishing and hunting and he was a Mr. Fixit, there was nothing Walt couldn't repair.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl and Robert and his sister, Alice Sanders.
Walt is survived by his wife, Fay; sons, Gregory (Tracy) and Gary (Vicki); daughter, Laurienne (Dan) Lundgren; grandchildren, Chad (Jennifer), Jesse, Nathan (Renee) Alvar, Liza Lundgren and Leah Lundgren and great grandchildren, Loganne, Carter and Quinn and several nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to all the staff at Viewcrest Health Center and to the Essentia Hospice team who took care of Walter.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3-5pm at St. Lawrence Church, 2410 Morris Thomas Rd. Duluth, where visitation will continue Monday, starting at 10am with Services at 11am. Military honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard will follow. Burial will be at the Hermantown Cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, (218) 727-3555.
