William A. Windus, 88, of Duluth, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Monday, June 11, 2012 at Essentia-St. Marys Medical Center in Duluth. William Albert Windus was born Aug. 8, 1923 in Duluth, the son of Frederick A. and Dora (Simonson) Windus. He grew up in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and was stationed in India. After the war he received his electrical engineering degree from the University of Minnesota. He married Marlis East on Dec. 19, 1948 at Central Avenue Methodist Church in Duluth. They later moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where William worked for Collins Radio Company. They returned to Duluth in November of 2007 and was residing at Lakeshore. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, IEEE, Kiwanis Club, and played viola in the Cedar Rapids Symphony. He was an avid ham radio operator, and enjoyed model ship building, traveling with family and making lefse. William was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Harry. William is survived by his wife, Marlis; children, David (Debbie) Windus of St. Louis, Mo., and Joan (Jim) Halquist of Duluth; grandsons, Peter and Jonathan Halquist. GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth with Military honors by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Reception following at Lakeshore. Memorial preferred to the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra or the Cedar Rapids Symphony. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home (218) 727-3555.
