It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Zachary "Zach" Smith, age 39, of Des Moines, Iowa, who left us far too soon on November 2, 2024. Zach was a beloved brother, son, uncle, nephew, grandson, friend, colleague, and educator, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for others.
Born and raised in Des Moines, Zach spent the majority of his life in his hometown, where he built lasting relationships and fostered a strong sense of community. He was known for his infectious laugh, big heart, and selfless nature. Zach’s friends and family will always remember him for his quick wit, pranks, and ability to bring joy to those around him. Despite his playful humor as a child, Zach grew into a deeply compassionate and caring adult who dedicated his life to helping others.
Zach attended Drake University, where he earned three degrees, solidifying his lifelong passion for learning. Zach most recently taught at through the Virtual Campus for Des Moines Public School District. He made a profound impact as an educator, specializing in English Language Learning (ELL). Zach’s work helped countless students and teachers, and he was honored this year as the Des Moines Public School Educator of the year from the Rotary Club. His dedication extended beyond the classroom, as his work at PLACE Academy helped young adults earn their high school diplomas. Zach was also actively involved in the Mid-America Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (MIDTESOL), contributing to the organization’s growth and mission.
Zach’s commitment to others was not limited to his career. He was deeply involved in his community and dedicated much of his time to causes that mattered to him. Whether it was through volunteering, organizing events, or simply being there for those in need, Zach was always the first to offer his help. His love for gift-giving, his thoughtful support of family and friends, and his passion for making the world a better place left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Above all, Zach was devoted to his family. He was the most dependable, loving son, brother, and uncle, always putting others before himself. Zach’s close relationship with his parents, especially as they navigated life’s challenges, is a testament to the depth of his character. His love for his family was evident in his daily calls and the small, meaningful gestures that showed how much he cared.
Zach was also a passionate women’s basketball fan and loved to read, often turning to the works of Maya Angelou for inspiration. One of her quotes, “A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again,” perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Zach’s life. His memory will continue to inspire all who were lucky enough to know him, as his great soul lives on in the hearts of his loved ones.
Zach is survived by his parents, Terri and Nelson Smith; his sister, Dori Rapaport; his nieces and nephews, Ariella Streit and Elijah Streit; his aunt Sandra Rapaport; and many extended family members and friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday December 1, 2024 at 10:00 am at the Drake University Schickler Courtside Club at the Knapp Center, where we will gather to celebrate Zach’s remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Drake University’s Women’s Basketball.
Zach’s memory will forever be a blessing, and his love and spirit will bring us together again and again.
